Dr. Joel Virkler received his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in 2014 at Corwell Health Farmington Hills Hospital (formerly Botsford Hospital) with Michigan State University. In 2015, Dr. Virkler completed his fellowship in Joint. Reconstruction and Sports Medicine at EmergeOrtho (formerly Triangle Orthopaedic Associates, Duke trained orthopedic surgeons) in Durham, North Carolina.
He received specialized surgical training in Mako robotic joint replacement surgery and sports-related injury surgery including ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, shoulder instability with labral repair and nonsurgical sports injury treatments. He currently offers a new procedure to repair ACL tears with biologic augmentation. He is the team physician for Faith Christian High School and Tri-County High School.
Dr. Virkler is board-certified with the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and pursues the latest approaches and techniques with continuing medical education facilitated by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.
